A simple, honest guide to getting in the game

You don’t need carbon plates, a $12,000 bike, or a coach shouting splits into a stopwatch to get started in endurance sports.

You just need:

šŸ‘€ Curiosity

🧘 Patience

šŸ‘Ÿ A decent pair of shoes

If you’ve ever watched a race and thought, ā€œCould I do that?ā€Ā ā€” this one’s for you.

šŸ¤” WhatĀ Are Endurance Sports, Anyway?

Endurance sports are any physical activity that tests your ability to keep going — not for minutes, but for hours.

We’re talking about:

  • šŸƒā€ā™€ļø RunningĀ (from 50Ks to 100-milers)

  • 🚓 CyclingĀ (gravel, road, mountain)

  • šŸŠ SwimmingĀ (often part of triathlons)

  • šŸŠā€ā™‚ļøšŸš“šŸƒ Triathlons

The distances vary. The disciplines change. But the goal is always the same: go long, and see what happens.

šŸ›‘ You Don’t Need to Be ā€œAn Athleteā€

This is the biggest mental hurdle for most people.

You don’t need to be fast. You don’t need a background in sports. You don’t need to lookĀ like you run ultras. You just need to start — slow, imperfect, and curious.

You’ll get stronger. You’ll go longer. And one day, you’ll realize you’re doing things you used to think were impossible. šŸš€

šŸ› ļø What YouĀ Do Need

You don’t need much to get started. But a few basics help:

  • šŸ‘Ÿ ShoesĀ that don’t hurt (road or trail-specific)

  • šŸ•¶ļø Comfortable clothingĀ that doesn’t chafe

  • šŸ’§ A way to stay hydrated

  • šŸ•’ 30–60 minutesĀ a few times a week

Everything else? Bonus. Start where you are. Upgrade later.

āŒ› Start Small, Stay Consistent

Don’t overthink the plan. Just get out the door.

Try this:

  • Week 1–2: 3 sessions/week, 20–30 mins

  • Week 3–4: Bump one session to 45+ mins

  • Week 5+: Add a weekend effort — longer, slower, more scenic

Whether it’s run-walks, mellow bike rides, or hikes with friends — consistency > perfection.

šŸ’¬ Find Your People (Even If It’s Just One)

Endurance sports canĀ be lonely, but they don’t have to be.

  • Join a local running group šŸ‘„

  • Hop on a group ride šŸš“ā€ā™‚ļø

  • Follow your favorite athletes on Strava or YouTube šŸ”

  • Or just text a friend when you finish a workout — accountability counts

You’ll be amazed how many people are out there doing this — and how welcoming the scene really is.

🧠 Expect the Doubts (and Go Anyway)

Starting something new is awkward. You’ll feel slow. You’ll compare yourself. Your brain will say, ā€œYou’re not cut out for this.ā€

But here’s the truth:

Everyone feels that way in the beginning.

And the only way out… is through. šŸ›¤ļø

šŸ Final Word: You Belong Here

You don’t need perfect gear. You don’t need elite genetics. You don’t need to ā€œproveā€ anything.

If you show up, if you keep trying, if you lean into the long — you’re already one of us. 🫶
